Project Description
Decatur, Georgia
The Decatur Recreation Center stands as an historic and cultural beacon in the Atlanta Metro community of Decatur. Originally constructed in 1958, the building houses a diverse venue of recreational, civic and arts programs for the City of Decatur. Working closely with city officials, Rec Center staff and the local community through interactive design charrettes, LP3 architecture initially re-programmed the facility and then developed plans to renovate the building to accommodate the functional requirements of a 21st century recreation and community center. With the help of Palmer Engineering, the vintage mid century building has been restored and updated. The lawn of the structure is being utilized as new and more active city park space. The building’s renovation is designed to achieve a LEED Silver Certification standard. It was also awarded with the Georgia American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award for Design in 2013, the Georgia AIA’s highest award for design quality.
